Welcome to the Spiritual Fitness Journal.
The Spiritual Fitness Journal consists of a series of Scripture Readings which covers the entire Bible over a three year period. Beginning at Genesis and Matthew, the readings alternate between the Old and New Testaments.
The adult readings cover the entire Scriptures. The children’s readings consist of shortened readings covering the same passages. There is a brief reading each day for family devotions, which consists of a few key verses from the same reading areas. There is a memory verse for each week, chosen from the passage of the week.
The most important part of the Spiritual Fitness Journal is the journaling process. It only requires a pencil/pen and paper (or a computer keyboard). The reader should ask and answer in writing two key questions: “What do I learn about God (Father, Son and Holy Spirit)?” and “What do I learn about myself?”.
In the family context, mom and dad can complete the adult journaling process each day, and the children can complete the passages for children. At the dinner table, dad or mom or one of the children can read the brief family devotions portion. A meaningful discussion can then occur as family members share their answers to the two key journaling questions. In this way the whole family can get to know the Bible together and can enjoy meaningful discussion around the table. Each family member can memorize the designated memory verse for the week and recite the same to the entire family.
In the local church context, the entire membership can move through the three year process together. Answering the journal questions can provide meaningful interaction in the small group context. Pastors can plan sermon series around the passages being read by the congregation. In this way the preaching/teaching can be integrated with the private and family Bible study within the church families. It can also provide a way in which the entire congregation can memorize at least 52 Scripture verses or passages per year.
There is no finer way to learn the Scriptures and to experience deep and abiding spiritual growth than consistent Bible reading accompanied by written responses.
