The city of Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse cities in Canada. Boasting a population of 603,502,[i] it is a vibrant, energetic city that is constantly changing. In the midst of this dynamic city, there are competing ideas about the population of Vancouverites who regularly attend church.

Currently, there are a total of 322 Christian churches in Vancouver. Therefore, there is one church for every 1874.23 people. Of these 322 churches, 172 provided us with attendance data for the year 2011; roughly 53.41%. The total worship service attendance of these churches in 2011 was 36,275, creating an average of 210.9 people per responding church. If we assume that the average attendance of those 172 churches is representative of all 322 churches in Vancouver, there were a total of 67,910 people who attended church in Vancouver in 2011.

In Vancouver, 47.79% of the population claim to have no religious affiliation, whereas 11.25% of Vancouver’s population regularly attends church.  Of the population that regularly attends church, approximately 63.47% attend a Protestant church, which is 3.81% of the population of Vancouver. 74.25% of those that attend a Protestant church attend a church with an Evangelical affiliation. Approximately 37.49% of the population that attend church attend a Catholic Church, which is roughly 2.25% of the population of Vancouver.

There are 39 different Christian traditions in Vancouver. The largest tradition is the Roman Catholic Church with a weekly church attendance of 12990 in 2011. Therefore, the Catholic Church comprises 35.8% of the total population attending church in Vancouver. The second largest tradition in Vancouver is the Baptist tradition with a weekly church attendance of 5,995, or 16.52% of the population attending church in Vancouver.

It is interesting to note that of the population in Vancouver that affiliate themselves with Christianity, the majority of them are female (55%) whereas 44.9% are male.

Vancouver is a large and diverse city. Although the percentage of the population that attend church may not be that high, there is diversity among the population that attends church.

[i] According to the 2011 Census. Note that population data from the 2011 Census and the 2011 National Household Survey (NHS) is used for Religious Affiliation comparisons
